Markneukirchen was undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the great dynasties
of violin making, affectionately known as Germany’s Cremona, it consistently put forward violins
onto the market which were powerhouses in their own right, this ‘Nichola Giorgi’ is absolutely no
exception.
The age of this violin is evident through the beautiful maturation of the varnish, firming itself as a
deep chocolate colour, with blushes of gold hinting through. The distinctive F-holes mirror each other
well, eyeing one another symmetrically. In both the upper and lower bouts of the violin, the rich
golden ground has made its way through over the past century and a half, now shining through the
deep brown which once overshadowed it. This has created a somewhat rather glassy effect on the
violin, a highly desirable appearance for any player. The ribs of the instrument are clearly darker in
colour, with special ‘sunspots’ shining through, of a lighter, royal gold. Turning to the back of the
violin, the golden ground is even more pronounced, and shines through with stunning quality, a true
reflection of Markneukirchen’s close attention to detail and even luxury. Each brush stroke visible,
this is not one to be missed by the eye!
The repairs have been expertly cleated and tidied, with a grafted neck on the violin to suit the body
to an appropriate degree. The scroll mimics the colourings of the body well, and this violin will suit
professionals and teachers alike, who are after a seasoned violin to cherish.
It is important to note, that although Nichola Giorgi is a Turinese violin maker from the 17th and 18th
century, lesser common Italian names were used in Germany in their instruments, as there was a
greater chance to sell by the less seen names, often as Italian.
Restoring and Refurbishing Violins and Fiddles for sale since 2019. John found his passion for violins and fiddles later in life. He now sources, refurbishes and restores old violins and fiddles to be reborn and replayed - hence the name: Revivo Violins. - Revivo - 'to become alive, again'.
John poured himself into learning and restoring violins during the pandemic. He became certified in violin repair through the Iris Carr restoration course. In addition, he's shared bench time with a local violin maker and restorer, as well as enjoyed coaching sessions from other violin makers and professionals.
He's restored hundreds of violins and gains just as much joy from watching a new player receive their new starter violin as he does handing over an advanced or master violin to a professional.
Music is the language that crosses all languages, barriers, beliefs, and borders...I believe the violin is the most beautiful. Those instruments of old, deserve to sing once more in the desiring hands of those here today.
