Excellent example of frontier fiddle making by none other than Selman Sol. E Roach.

**Clarification in the video, I mis-spoke - we do NOT believe this violin was re-graduated - but rather this violin was constructed this way origionally.**

Sol. Roach in his pre1920's-ish constructions had a simpler and thicker top plate graduation style, sometime in the 20's his graduations became thinner and more complex, with even better tones. So, what was meant to be said is: this violin has his new and better graduation techniques compared to his older violins. In fact he did on some of his earlier models go back and re-graduate some of those, as outlined and documented in the online book.

I encourage you to read more about this legendary historical man, violin maker, gun smith, hunter, father and family man. You can read about this maker's life at:

This is an amazing playing violin / fiddle.

It's being listed at the value it's worth to me, and its rarity. I understand only about 30 known surviving examples by his hand exist today. This is a later example in his career when his skill and plate shaping is at its peak.

It's apparent it's Sol's hand, his label, and style in some of his later fiddles. He seems to have 2 distinct styles, one with the flared exaggerated pionted f-hole wings, and this style which showed up later in his violin making days. There are a few similar styles represented on the family's webiste above.

This fiddle sounds amazing - on par with true master/professional violins, and is a joy to simply view and hold.

Comes case and new bow shown in photos.

We hope you enjoy the sound of living history!

Every Millimeter matters, and is crucial on a violin. One millimeter difference on the bridge height, or string height, makes the difference between an effortless playing violin, or one that's difficult and hard to play.

It's the Formula One (F1) sports car of instruments. They are hand built and therefore unique, each requires a great deal of attention and precision for the player. That's why violins purchased from mass markets like Amazon are frowned upon, they typically don't get the attention and fine details right that ensure a violin is at it's peak for the player. It takes a skilled craftsman or luthier to ensure everything is correct from the tail piece, to the sound post, to the bridge, string height, and pegs just to name a few of the hundreds of variable that come together to make a great sounding violin.

Each violin sold here has been reviewed to ensure the violin is performance ready, and set up properly for the player.
