Question: Why do your violins come with Wittner tailpieces with built in 4 fine tuners?
Answer: I lost a sale once because a young violinist had never tuned a violin using pegs. Most violin 'purists' insist on having a tailpiece with only one fine tuner on the E string only - Yet most can't tell you why. Here's why: Weight. The lighter the tailpiece the more sound is able to be transferred to the violin. Technology has come a long way since the days of needing weight savings, such as Wittner composite tailpieces with fine tuners. You get the ease of 4 fine tuners (saving much wear from the wooden pegs) while realizing the weight savings our predecessors sought. Times have changed, technology has advanced, sadly, the violin world is slow to accept facts and change. Secondly, Tailpieces, like pegs, fingerboards, and end pins are wear items and meant to be changed out during the life of the violin. If the tailpiece is not what you like - it can be easily swapped out to your liking. Please don't let a trivial and small detail like a tailpiece keep you from buying a fine violin.
