Technology has come a long way since the days of needing weight savings, such as Wittner composite tailpieces with fine tuners. You get the ease of 4 fine tuners (saving much wear from the wooden pegs) while realizing the weight savings our predecessors sought. Times have changed, technology has advanced, sadly, the violin world is slow to accept facts and change. Secondly, Tailpieces, like pegs, fingerboards, and end pins are wear items and meant to be changed out during the life of the violin.
